By the Way, Meet Vera Stark.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark is a hilarious play loosely based off of  Theresa Harris, an African American actress in the 1930s. Theresa Harris lit up the screen and stole the scene in the 1933 movie “Baby Face,” where she starred opposite Barbara Stanwyck. But in those days it was hard for African American women to make it in Hollywood. This play takes place in 1933, 1973 and 2003. The first half of the play shows Vera Stark (Sanaa Lathan) as a maid for the starlet Gloria Mitchell (Amanda Detmer.) Vera shares an apartment with two other African American women, Lottie (Kimberly Herbert Gregory) and Anna Mae (Merie Dandridge) who are also trying to figure out how to make it in Hollywood. Anna Mae is light skinned so when she gets asked out on a date by a famous director she tells him she’s Brazilian. So, as Vera is helping Gloria learn her lines for the new movie “The Belle of New Orleans” she discovers that there is a part that she herself is perfect for. And funny chaos ensues as she tries to audition for this coveted role. The second act takes place in 2003 and 1973, with the 2003 people playing back an interview of Vera and Gloria from 1973. It is a group of 3 analyst who are analyzing Veras behavior during the interview. I hate to say more about the story because I don’t wanna spoil it! It honestly is an amazing play, which is now playing at the Geffen playhouse. You will be on the floor laughing throughout the play. There is never a dull moment, the cast is absolutely fantastic. Go see it!

The Mindy Project

The Mindy Project is a new FOX show by Mindy Kaling. It’s a hilarious show about Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling,) a OB/GYN who is now in her 30s and still single. She’s pretty much a hot mess! Like, always drunk, sleeping with the one guy who will never commit, and taking patients without insurance. Chris Messina (my love,) is also in this show…which was honestly the reason I had any interest in watching the show. He plays a cocky, handsom OB/GYN who is constantly testing Mindy and the other doctor. The other doctor, Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks,) is a handsom young British OB/GYN who Mindy is constantly having one night stands with. He’s sort of a sex addict. All in all, this show is hilarious. Mindy Kaling’s writing and acting is amazing. She is a terrific comedian. I have seen the pilot episode 3 times! It comes on Tuesday nights on FOX at 9:30 pm, right after New Girl. I can’t wait until the next episode!

Mulberry St Pizza

Mulberry St Pizza. I have been going there since I could remember. It is the only place in LA where you can get an amazing New York style pizza. The pizza pies are huge, I mean like crazy big. It really isn’t that expensive. And they have very unique pizzas. You can also go and order your pizza by the slice, which is what I usually do. My favorite slice is the “Pasta Pizza” (as shown below,) I know that sounds really weird but it’s amazing!  That with the Lorna Luft chopped salad! Perfection! They always have great specials, too! They have four different locations around Los Angeles, my favorites being the ones on South Beverly Dr and Canon Dr (both in Beverly Hills.) You really see all the celebrities that love to eat there. I have nothing bad to say about this place. It’s all good. No, it’s all delicious!

Mulberry St Pizza.

Nobu by the Shore

Nobu has always been one of my favorite sushi places. I’ve always loved going to the one in Malibu. When I found out that they changed locations from inside the Malibu shopping center to right on the beach I knew I had to go right away! It’s very ironic, eating fish on the beach. I went on tuesday night and it was absolutely breathtaking! I had made reservations a week in advance, thinking that’s a long time. I got there and they were gonna seat my friend and I inside! Which, come on, when you go there you have to sit outside! So, as I was getting seated I notice a couple outside leaving so I had the people clean off the table and seat us outside. The service, by the way, is impeccable! I mean, when you get up to use the restroom, they come and fold your napkin for you. My friend spilled soy sauce all over the table, and I kid you not, someone was there to clean it 2 seconds later. Amazing! The food? Come on, do I even have to say it? It’s Nobu, I’m making another reservation as I type this! We ordered, yellowtail sashimi, tuna chips, the red snapper sushi, a white fish sashimi with lemon and cayenne pepper (which was beyond belief!,) and my friend got spicy tuna rolls. She also got a glass of wine and another cocktail. Our bill only came out to $120, which is  not bad at all, I thought it was gonna be way more! Our waiter was so sweet, he brought me free dessert! Ask for Kevin!

Katsuya Brentwood

The time has finally come for me to review some food! And why not start with my favorite of all foods…Sushi. I live in Los Angeles, home of some of the greatest sushi bars. More specifically, I live in Brentwood/Bel Air (kind of like Beverly Hills, I’m on the cusp of Brentwood and Bel Air,) in the same neighborhood as one of the most famous sushi bars, Katsuya. Katsuya is owned by SBE, one of the biggest restaurant groups in LA, they have great places such as Gladstones Cleo, Bazaar, the list goes on. I remember the first time I went there… I met Steven Spielberg, it was epic. I hadn’t been back in a while, so the other night I decided to take myself on a date and go there. I walked in, the crowd is very hip and young, I decided to sit at the sushi bar. One of my favorite things is Yellowtail sashimi with jalapenos on it, so I ordered that first. I turn my head for 10 seconds, no joke, and my sashimi was ready. I thought that was so weird. Turns out they keep that in a mini fridge pre-made. Listen, I’m all for going to Whole Foods and getting pre-made sushi. But, when I’m going to a pretty pricy restaurant and they’r charging me $19 for pre-made sushi, I get kind of annoyed. So, I don’t know if you’ve ever gone to sushi and just asked the chef to make you what he wants, but that’s what I like to do. You get out of your spicy tuna, california roll comfort zone and realize that red snapper is the greatest thing ever! I told my sushi chef (who wasn’t even asian btw, he was hispanic,) that I wanted him to make me whatever he thought was good. He didn’t understand the concept. So, I decided to try to explain the red snapper I like (I really hope it’s called red snapper, I still don’t know what I order so I describe it,) “it’s like a really good salty, lemony thing!” He makes me this amazing salty lemony thing! TO DIE FOR! The highlight of my meal. By this time I have moved on to the 3rd course, and honestly he made me something with spicy salmon and some eggs. Not great, it tasted too much like mayo. Here I was at the end of my 3 course meal, $40 later, and I didn’t even order a drink. I guess I was pretty disappointed. But, hey, I guess it’s one of those places you go to with friends, for the crowd. The service was pretty good, and they have good looking waiters. If you want to go to sushi for the crowd, go here. If you want to go for good sushi, go somewhere else. I’m going to the new Nobu on PCH tuesday, hopefully that fills both needs. I’ll keep you posted.

Celeste and Jesse Forever

I recently saw this movie, Celeste and Jesse Forever. I had no idea what it was going to be about, but I love Andy Samberg so I had to see it. Basically it’s a story of a divorcing couple Celeste (Rashida Jones,) and Jesse (Andy Samberg,) who still remain best friends during their divorce. They hang out every single day, and act as if they are still together. Until, one day when Jesse finds out he has gotten someone pregnant and decides to marry his baby mama. Celeste gets super jealous and goes through a downward life spiral. Also in the movie is Emma Roberts (who plays a rebellious 20 year old popstar,) Chris Messina (who plays a very charming asshole type interested in Celeste,) Ari Graynor and Eric Christian Olsen (who play Celeste and Jesse’s best married friends,) Elijah Wood (who plays Celestes gay business partner,) and Rebecca Dayan (who plays Jesse’s baby mama.)

Everyone did such a fantastic job in this movie. Rashida Jones was hilarious and you really felt for her during the movie. I love Andy Samberg with all of my heart, and going into the movie I thought he was going to have all of my attention, until Chris Messina appeared. Chris Messina stole the show in my opinion. He has such a captivating charm, that when he’s in front of the camera you can’t help but put all of your focus on him. As soon as I got home I went straight to IMDB and looked him up. Emma Roberts was perfect for her part, but I felt that at some points you could tell she was trying way too hard.

The directing was very interesting. It was great when it comes to the actors and all that. But, I wasn’t crazy about some of the camera movements. It was very unsteady and made me dizzy.

All in all it was great portrail of modern couples, and todays dating world. I really enjoyed this movie and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is single, in a relationship, or especially getting a divorce! It puts a great positive spin on staying friends with your ex, which I think is really important.

The Exorcist Play

On Sunday August 12th, 2012 I went to the fabulous Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles to see the first ever Exorcist play. The cast includes: Brooke Shields (as Chris MacNeil,) Emily Yetter (as Regan,) David Wilson Barnes (as Damien Karras,) Stephan Bogardus (as Dr. Strong,) Richard Chamberlain (as Father Merrin,) Manoel Felciano (as Father Joe,) Harry Groener (as Burke Dennings,) Tom Nelis (as Dr Klein,) and Roslyn Ruff (as Carla.)

Let’s start with the fact that The Exorcist is one of my all time favorite films! I even started reading the book, but that was even more terrifying. So, when I heard that The Geffen Playhouse was putting on the first ever Exorcist play I jumped at the chance to see it. Being such a big fan of the movie, I definitely had high expectations, and wondered how they were going to portray the film on a live stage. The entire show took place on one set, the church, with the table being used as the main piece of furniture changing from various tables to the bed. The film is famous for its make-up, which in the play was non-existent. There were no make-up or wardrobe changes. Everything was done with lighting, which really shows you the power of good lighting. I know what you’re thinking, “how about the famous levitation scene?” Well, they did put that in the play, how could they not? And it was actually mid-boggling! After the play was over everyone was asking how they made her levitate. There were no signs of strings, no glass under her, nothing! It still is making me think, even in the movie you can see strings, but in this live show, you can’t see anything. I’m pretty sure it was magic. The play definitely exceeded my expectations.

All the actors did an amazing job, the one that stood out the most to me was Harry Groener, who played Burke Dennings, the director of the film that Chris MacNeil is in. If you know the film you know that the character of Burke is a drunk, and adds a comedic perspective to the film. Harry Groener nailed the part of Burke, he was absolutely hilarious, and when he took the stage all of my attention went to him. It’s safe to say that he stole the show. Emily Yetter, who played Regan, was also very good. She had the perfect look for the part, very young and innocent. I thought that the character of Damien Karras was poorly cast when it comes to the look, we know Damien as the Brooklyn-Italian type, David Wilson Barnes, looked more like a nice Jewish guy. But other than that all of the actors were absolutely terrific!

The show was directed by John Doyle and written by John Pielmeier. The directing was actually amazing. When the curtain came up and it was only one set I thought to myself, “Oh no, this is going to be terrible, how can they only use one set?” But John Doyle made it work so well, if there was another set the play would not have as much an impact as it did. The writing was phenomenal, of course you could never compete with the original screenplay, but it was perfect fot the 2012 theater audience.

All in all, I would definitely recommend the play to anyone who has or hasn’t seen the movie. Whether you love the movie, or not, I would definitely find out when this play is playing near you and go check it out.

Two thumbs up!

About Reviews

“I may not know much about art, but I know what I like.”

-Orson Welles

That pretty much sums up what my reviews are gonna be, whether it be books, movies, music, plays etc… Although, I will say I am pretty good judge when it comes to movies. I’m gonna try to do a review every Sunday, it gives me a pretty good excuse to go see new movies. Each week will probably be a different subject, like one week movies and the next a book. I’ll even do places like restaurants and nails salons. I hope I help!
